It would certainly be worth a try! Stress related illnesses and employee stress related absences cost employers 300 billion dollars annually.

Stress is experienced in a variety of ways. 77% of individuals experience pain regularly in their body as a result of the stress they are experiencing. Regular psychological symptoms are experienced by 73% of workers. It’s a wonder companies are able to function at all.

Changing the Gray Matter of the Brain

A study by the University of Massachusetts in 2011 measured the gray matter of brains before and after meditation. Participants were told to record the time they spent in meditation of their choice each day. Over a period of eight weeks, the average meditation time was 27 minutes per day.  The results were amazing. Not only did participants say they felt more empowered and less stressed out, the gray matter of their brains changed.

Yes, they physically changed their brains! Gray-matter density in the hippocampus, known to be important for learning and memory, as well as associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection increased by 25%. Yes, their gray matter in the hippocampus grew up to 25% just by meditating. Conversely, the gray-matter in the amygdala, which plays an important role in anxiety and stress decreased proportionately.

Effects of Stress on Workers

Another study conducted by David Levy concluded that those who had been trained in
meditation stayed on task longer, were less distracted and more focused. His study also found that the participants improved their recall and memory skills while experiencing less stress.

Another startling statistic is that 60% of workers are so stressed in their current job, that they are compelled to seek new employment. Unfortunately they may end up in yet another stressful job.

More and more companies are empowering employees by teaching mindfulness classes and providing meditation rooms. Apple and Google provide both classes and quiet areas to help with stress. They knowthat unhappy employees are at least 10% less productive.
